Home again

I got up early and, worried about traffic, took a cab to the airport right after breakfast. It was a quick drive, tho, and the gates are right off security, so I got there with plenty of time to spare. Got home to find Betty Boyd Carroli’s Inside the White House waiting for me, along with a DVD of the Kennedy tour.

  1. Derek – glad you enjoyed the Decatur House. believe it or not, of the more than 60 houses that Latrobe designed in this country there are only THREE left! The Decatur House, in DC, the Pope Villa, in Lexington, Ky., and Adena, in Chillicothe, Ohio. And that’s IT! Unless you consider the top floor of the old Bank of Louisiana building, here in New Orleans, whose 2nd floor was designed as a residence for the bank manager. Snadon and Fazio did include that in their massive book on Latrobe’s domestic architecture. I always give the building a pat when I walk by it… Demanted, I know…

By the way – I’d really be interested to know how good the picture quality, resolution, etc. is on that Jackie W.H. tour DVD.

  3. I may be going back to Columbus, OH for my next gig. If so, I’ll take a day trip to Chillicothe and check out Adena in person.

The DVD appears to be an authentic CBS/Field Museum copy. The tour is the same slightly-jittery kinescope available previously (35mm film shooting a TV monitor). On DVD, it’s considerably smoother than VHS, of course. It feels just like you’re watching a Zenith black-and-white console TV.

  4. Re: the latest Yellow Oval Room pic- what’s with a painting partially covering a not-so-hidden hidden doorway? It only makes obvious that the doorway itself is useless. There’s got to be a better way for our First House.

  5. I think in general there are too many doors in the White House. Every room seems to have at least 1, sometimes 2, doors to every adjacent room. I suppose it allows different occupants to decide which to use and which to block with furniture, tho.
